“Pinot Noir With Character, Flavor Leaving Money in the Wallet”

It is soooo hard to find inexpensive Pinot Noir with enough gumption, taste and balance for under $20.

But world class Oregon Pinot Noir producers with good fruit left over after producing the lofty, expensive pinots, are turning up with second labels, carrying terrific wine. These are bodacious beauties with complexity, fruit and a satisfying finish that compliments food or is well served at the cocktail hour with light appetizers.

The wines are perfectly quaffable now or after short-to-medium-term cellaring.

You’ve heard of getting the best bang for the buck. With these wines, you get the best punch for the pinot. You won’t find better bargains for the quality.

1. O'Reilly Pinot Noir 02 $13.99- a steal from the makers of Owen Roe and Sineann. This is a lush, fruit forward wine with a lovely oak and butter nose, red cherry, bing cherry, subtle cardomon, nutmeg, and spice notes, white pepper, blackberry, and that silky, velvety texture in the mouth that usually costs over $40. This is a blend of wine from Owen Roe that did not make the cut for their highly rated Pinot noirs. Just a stunning value. Drink now, not for the cellar.

2. Broadley Pinot Noir 01 $15.99- reserve quality, a sophisticated, Burgundian styled wine, made to cellar and enjoy over the next 6 years. An unbelievable price for such a sophisticated, age-worthy wine. Scent of clean oak and berry is followed by well balanced red berry and black cassis notes, hint of pepper, clove, and vanilla, a long, classic finish. Full-bodied but dances on the tongue. Cellar for 4-6 years for continued enjoyment.

3. Laurel Ridge Pinot Noir 01 $10.99- Winemaker Jason Bull moved up from Napa where he worked as winemaker for Von Strasser and Mayo Family wineries, and a consulting winemaker gig with Domaine Danica, a small highend Pinot noir producer in Healdsburg. His work with a French wine barrel company has clearly given him an edge when it comes to oak. This wine shows his expertise and, as Luarel Ridge is trying to get back into the swing of things with a new winery and winemaker, the price is a steal. The wine has a delightful tutti-fruiti nose and lovely black cherry, red raspberry, nutmeg, anise, sage, and blackberry flavors. A clean finish makes this a lovely wine for summer barbeques, great with a burger or a summer salad, and such a great price! Drink in next 12 months.

4. "Jigsaw" Pinot Noir from Ransom Spirits $13.99- Avalon's store manager Ann says: "This is a medium bodied wine that really stands out from the crowd." Good earthy mushroom nose with a good dark fruit middle and the finish is perfect. Dark fruit with some oak but not too much. Great wine for the price. You simply cannot get a better Pinot Noir at this price for the fantastic flavors!! It is long but not lingering with a strong acidic backbone to stand up to everything including Lamb. Actually might cellar well, new winery, so no track record, but might be worth putting down a few bottles in the cellar.

5. McKinlay Pinot Noir 01 $11.00- Matt Kinne makes small amounts of very highly rated pinot noirs. His 2000 Special Selection received 93 points from Wine Spectator and was listed by Harvey Steiman as one of his recommended picks in his annual Oregon article. The 01 Pinot noir is an exceptional value. The nose has rich cherry and vanilla scents, and the flavors are multilayered and velvety, combining rich black berry, plum, bing cherry, white pepper, tiny hints of sage and clean earth. The finish is long and silky. Amazing stuff for the price, a little close when first opened, so let it air, even pour it into a carafe to bring out the flavors.

6. Patricia Green Cellars "Dollar Bills Only" Pinot noir 01 $12.99- PGC second label, photo is of the jukebox at Lumpy's, a bar in Dundee where Patty and Jim have been known to hang out. This is Temperance Hill juice and is a wonderful single vineyard wine at a ridiculous price. The glut is making for some really crazy deals. This is one of the best! Nose of candied bing cherries, buttery vanilla, and spice. Excellent backbone with layers of black cherry, red cherry, blackberry, cassis, white pepper, hints of fennel, cardamon, clean saddle leather, finish goes on and on. Rich, lovely body and very ageable. What a great deal from PGC! Drink now for best flavors.

7. Adelsheim second label Wallace Brooks Pinot noir 00 $12.99 - Adelsheim is justifiably proud of this deeply flavored, rich Pinot noir at a bargain price. Ann says it is a best buy! They really put some lovely fruit into this wine, and the toasty oak and nicely balanced cherry and berry flavors show off the winery's experience and style.
