Winetasting
with Coeur de Terre
TOMORROW -
Saturday
August 11th
12:00-3:00, free
from Avalon Wine
Calling
all Oregon Pinot fans: do
not miss this Saturday’s
tasting.
Coeur
de Terre is one of the hottest new wineries
in Oregon.
Scott
and Lisa Neal moved from Colorado to
the foothills outside McMinnville
to pursue their vision of growing
superb Pinot noir. It
worked.
Very few
Oregon Pinots are selected
two years straight for Avalon’s Reserve Pinot
Noir Club—yet Coeur de
Terre did it in their first
two major commercial vintages,
04 and 05 (consisting of a mere
couple-few hundred cases total
production). The Coeur
de Terre Pinots have also been
selected for the Portland Indie
Wine Festival two years in a
row. Yet their prices
remain fair; the Neal’s
commitment to value is highly
commendable.
The
Wines
Coeur
de Terre Estate Pinot noir
2005
—A
serious candidate for best
under $30 Oregon Pinot noir. Plush
and soft, yet with great complexity
and acidity. Incredible
juice.
Coeur
de Terre Renelle’s
Block Pinot noir 2005
—Highly
recommended by Avalon, and a
Reserve Pinot Club selection
two years running. Built
for the long haul, but delicious
now. We love these kinds
of Pinots!
Coeur
de Terre Estate Riesling 2006
—A dry Oregon Riesling
that displays the breadth of
Scott’s winemaking. Only
available at the store, this
wine is too limited for us to
offer on the website.
The winery
is open only twice a year,
and its steep gravel road
isn’t very hospitable
for driving. Instead,
head downtown for a rare opportunity
to taste knock-out Pinot.
Tasting
next Saturday: Boedecker
Cellars!
Athena and Stewart
are two most promising young
winemakers. Their ability
to find great fruit and make
exceptional wines separates
them from the pack of new
wineries. Their "Pappas Pinot
noir 05" ($18.95/$17.05) is
one of Oregon's best Pinot
deals, and their Boedecker
Athena, Stewart, and Shea
Pinots are big, lush treats.
Thanks for your support. See you on Saturday!
