At the end of May, Oregon's
wineries release a flurry of new Pinot noirs. You
can see the list of all the new Pinot releases
on our website, and we chose four
that really please to feature here. Also, Wine
Spectator just announced the Belle Vallee score,
so there's still some wine.
Here are a handful of Pinot
noirs with something for everyone -- everyday
Pinots to stock up on and cellar selections
to drink over the next several years. Pinots
that pair well with salmon and pork--(well,
all of them do)--and Pinots that pair well
with beef, like the Soter. All the wines
are good values for what’s in the bottle,
and the Belle Vallee and Andrew Rich are especially
case-order-worthy.
Slurp:
Belle
Vallee Pinot noir
Willamette Valley 2005
$19.75/
$21.95
Wine Spectator 91 points and Smart
Buy.
"Lithe, supple and juicy, with raspberry and
strawberry fruit. Gains some real depth,
with hints of mineral and toast, as the finish
sails on and on. Impressive for its
refinement coupled with brilliant flavors. Drink
now through 2015." —H.S.
Slurp
or Cellar:
Soter Vineyard
North Valley Pinot
noir ’05
$31.46/
$34.95
Seductive, supple, delicious. A
darker Pinot, with aromas of dark chocolate-covered
black cherries and subtle earth. Opulent
yet elegantly balanced, with layers of fruit
that are revealed over time. Black cherry
and fresh blackberry flavors give way to oak
spice on the lingering finish. Not quite
a Pinot fan? This one may change your mind.
Slurp:
Andrew Rich
“Cuvee B” Pinot noir ’05
$21.55/
$23.95
Catch
it while you can. The Cuvee B sells
out more rapidly with each vintage. Andrew
makes excellent wines, regardless of the varietal
but my favorite wines are his Pinots. Creamy
cherry and dark berry flavors are complemented
by subtle aromas of dried flowers, herbs, smoke
and minerals. Perfectly integrated
and yummy!
Cellar:
Carter
Vineyard
Hillblock Pommard
Pinot noir ’05
$35.96/
$39.95
Made by Ken Wright, this very popular Pinot is
back! The
nose is full of mixed berries, with bright cherry
tones, fresh cream, and truffles. Bright
and juicy flavors of mixed berries and cherries
are framed by a silky texture. Earth,
spice, and fruit hang on through the finish. The
Carter Hillblock will cellar nicely over the
next 4-6 years. Ken Wright crafts
this gem from 24 year old Pommard vines.
