Wild
Animale Red Wines
Wild and Lush
--- Under $30 Oregon Pinot noir ---- HUGE
Flavor
from Avalon Wine
The Animale Pinot noir is a
big bruiser of a wine, and at $25.16/$27.95,
it's one of the best priced. Usually, the big,
extracted, densely colored Pinots run upwards
of $45...or more.
Seattle geologist and winemaker
Matt Gubitos made 150 cases of Animale wine
in 2005...period. And that's a lot more than
he made in the past. Still, he's attracted
the attention of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate,
and the Seattle Times has written several glowing
articles. The winery is named for Matt's beloved
cat "Animale" and she's pictured
on the label.
Of Matt's current releases,
three wines stand out.
His Pinot noir is just
amazing for the price. His Syrah is dense and
dark. And his red blend, Maria Carmela, combines
Bordeaux varietals from the Yakima Valley into
a sophisticated blend with body and finess.
And none of these wines is more than $28.
Animale Pinot noir 05
$25.16/$27.95
An Oregon Pinot noir
made by a Washington winemaker, at an Oregon
vineyard. It's a big, juicy, lush, bomb
of a Pinot, made
from a tiny vineyard in the Yamhill-Cartlon
area. The two acres of Pinot grapes produced
a positively dinky harvest- only a
quarter of a ton per acre (2-3 tons is considered really
low).
The grapes
for the Animale Pinot noir 05 were clearly
harvested before the rains -- rich scents of
black raspberry, violets and roses are reflected
in the intense, rich, ripe black fruit flavors,
This is a lush, full-bodied Pinot -- lots of
spice, rich hints of creamy plum, berry, and
creamy cherry linger on the long finish. It's
ready to drink, unabashedly CA in style.
There's a big 12 cases of this
wine. Argh! But Matt says there's a bit more
of the 2006, and his friend is planting two
more acres. You can say what you like about
big, rich Pinots, but this wine, at under $30,
is a delicious steal.
Animale Syrah 05
$23.36/$25.95
One of
the better values in WA Syrah, Matt is very
true to the grape, and this wine has more
to it than just gushing black fruit. Brawny
and ebullient, with aromas of fresh blackberries,
hints of fresh ground peppercorns; a mouthfilling
experience of concentrated fruit and spice,
with a lingering, tangy finish. A syrah which
promises future years as well as immediate
enjoyment.
Animale
Maria Carmela Red Blend
05
$25.16/$27.95
Scents of black plum and blackberry, with
a hint of a floral component, lead to flavors
of sweet plum and berry and hints of soft spice
and white pepper. There's a moderately sweet
fruit impression in the mid palate, with spicy
note of cinnamon, cardamon, and white pepper.
Hints of candied red cherries show through
the dominant black stone fruit and berry flavors.
